Start with the item, not the box
DHL recommends assessing weight and fragility, choosing a strong box, protecting items individually and filling gaps to prevent movement. [1] These are general carrier guidelines. Agree on the actual solution for your parcel with the warehouse and the selected delivery provider.
Map vulnerable parts
Before purchase, identify glass panels, handles, thin edges and removable components. Send photographs and ask whether the set can be separated safely. For a gift, specify whether the retail box must be preserved. Seller packaging may serve a display purpose; its suitability for international transport needs a separate check.
Agree on the packing work
Request a description of the proposed protection, material and labour costs, and photographs before the box is closed. Discuss an additional outer box or specialist solution for difficult shapes. Avoid removing protective parts only to reduce volume. A fragile sticker cannot replace protection inside the parcel.
Recalculate freight after packing
Protection changes external dimensions and weight. Request final measurements for every package, actual weight and a calculation under the selected route’s rules. For Ukraine and Moldova, confirm the specific route and destination city are served. A preliminary estimate based on the unpacked item is not a final transport quote.
Retain evidence before dispatch
Request photographs of the item’s condition, internal protection and closed box with its package reference. Keep the invoice and agreed packing plan. Before paying for transport, ask about claim procedures, reporting deadlines and coverage for this item. On arrival, document the box and any damage, then follow the carrier’s reporting procedure; compensation is not automatic.
